Another successful Pie Auction was held at the end of February.  We auctioned off 38 items that were baked by 25 people who graciously offered to make a treat (or three).  Thank you!  We had all sorts of pies, from Maple Walnut and Apple, to Shepherd’s Pie and Chicken Pot Pie.  We auctioned off whoopie pies, cookies, fudge, even beef stew and beef jerky.  Which was a big hit!  25 bidders took home at least one item, with some making an extra donation at checkout.  Thank you!  During the auction, we also drew our Club 100 winners.  One bidder used her winnings towards her auction bill and another donated their $100 back to the club.  Thank you!  It was a fun night and we are already looking forward to next year.  With a few new ideas being planned, you are going to want to put this event on your calendar next winter.

As I write this (mid-March) we are preparing for another blast of winter.  We’ve been dealing with high winds and very low temperatures, which doesn’t make for an enjoyable day of snowmobiling (at least for me). But there have been some diehards out there and they have commented on how superb the trails still are, even after a mix of winter weather in early March.  Now we are bracing for the entire state to receive over a foot of snow in the next 24 hours.  We’ll see how much we can stretch this riding season into April after this big storm.  It’s been a great season and The Portage Lakers would like to thank all our supporters.  The members, volunteers, groomer operators, businesses, bakers, ticket sellers/buyers, those of you who attend our events, those who contribute to the fuel fund, or add a donation our trail fund boxes.  We are so thankful for each and every one of you.  We appreciate all the support and your wonderful comments on our trail system.  It makes the hard work of clearing trails, groomer maintenance, event planning, and everything else so rewarding when we have such great support behind us from all of you.

Our final meeting of the year will be on Friday, April 7th, 6:30 PM at Dean’s Motor Lodge.  Election of Officers will take place during this meeting.   We hope you enjoy some spring riding and have a fun summer.

Until fall,

Leslie Rafford
